Reproduced by permission of London Opinion. Printed by the Victoria House Printing Co., Ltd., Tudor Street, London, EC. Reproduced from an original poster, aided by the Imperial War Museum, by Gavin Martin Ltd. The slogan is cleverly constructed in the manner of a rebus, in which the subject of the sentence is an image rather than a word. The man depicted is actually Horatio Kitchener (Lord Kitchener), the British Minister of War, so the sentence should be read as follows: "British people, Lord Kitchener wants you." Join your country's army! God save the king" (British, Lord Kitchener wants you. Join your country's army. God save the king). The poster's effectiveness was such that it was revived in 1917 by James Montgomery Flagg, author of the famous U.S. Army call-to-arms poster featuring Uncle Sam. This poster was reprinted during World War II, becoming one of the most popular posters in the history of advertising.
