Persian tribal carpet afchar circa 1960 142x158cm

€1,100

Carpet entirely knotted by hand, pure wool, vegetable dyes, size: 158x142. In southeastern iran, live the semi-nomads of the afshar tribe. Many centuries ago, these nomads lived in northwestern iran, but a branch of the tribe was forced to move to the present-day region, where carpet making became an important economic sector. These rugs have dark red and blue shades and most of them feature stylized geometric patterns. It is believed to symbolize the skin of an animal that would be stretched before being primed. Today we also find the pattern without medallion and what is typical of afshar carpets is that they are relatively wide compared to their length.
