About: british furniture designer victor bramwell (vb) wilkins is best known for his fresco range for g-plan. Although all of wilkins' work was produced by g-plan, little biographical information is available on this designer. However, it can be assumed that he worked as an in-house designer for the british manufacturer for many years. In the 1960s, british furniture manufacturer g-plan set the standard for mainstream modernist furniture in post-war britain. In order to compete with imported scandinavian furniture, g-plan hired designer ib kofod-larsen (1921-2003), who created several designs for the company. It is assumed that wilkins was heavily influenced by kofod-larsen's designs, with his pieces often mistakenly attributed to kofod-larsen. Following the success of kofod-larsen, wilkins' fresco range is influenced by scandinavian design. Designed in 1966 and launched the following year, the most successful g-plan range includes a suite of furniture for all rooms, all finished in rich and elegant grained teak. The design itself combines the elegant, sculptural aesthetic of italian furniture with the unique scandinavian style so popular at the time. In addition to the fresco range, wilkins designed the astro coffee table (1969), with clear references to the in-50 coffee table (1944) by the designer.
