František Vízner (1936-2011) trained at the famous glassmaking schools of Nový Bor and železný Brod before completing his studies at the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague. After graduating, he was first employed as a glass designer at Sklo Union in Teplice, and later worked with heat-formed art glass at the Center of Arts and Crafts Glassworks in Skrdlovice. Vízner left the Czechoslovak glass industry in 1975 to pursue a successful career as a freelance artist, specializing in studio-cut glass. Throughout his career, Vízner strove to create harmonious geometric objects with internal tension. Although his pieces are based on the shapes of functional bowls and plates, we best understand their pure, simple volumes as non-functional sculptural forms. Vizner's extraordinary objects, with their clean, articulated lines, continue to impress collectors worldwide and are represented in the collections of the most important museums: Museum of Applied Arts and Crafts in Prague, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, Corning Museum of Glass and many others.
