Vintage Greek tragedy wall mask
Description
This beautiful terracotta wall mask is based on an ancient greek actor's mask, worn in dramas performed in theaters around 550 to 220 bc. Worn only by men, the masks had large open mouths to amplify their voices and exaggerated features to more clearly express their emotions. Masks also allowed an actor to play multiple roles. These masks were made of wood, wax or leather, so few have survived. Terracotta reproductions were made in a smaller size to be placed on tombs and shrines. This mask represents a young man with wide eyes, arched eyebrows and a grimacing mouth. Its expression is one of horror and part of a tragic drama. It was handmade in red clay then glazed with shades of copper and verdigris. The back is unglazed, showing bare terracotta and has a cord of the same color threaded through two holes and knotted on the front on each side. It is in excellent vintage condition, with no nicks, cracks or other damage. It measures 22 cm in height, 15.5 in width and 10 cm in depth.
