Bréhat oil on panel by Lucien Seevagen
Description
Rare and superb marine painted by lucien seevagen (1887-1959), oil on cardboard, signed lower right and located on the back "kerpont le jour, bréhat" and which measures 34.5cm long by 27cm high. This painting will delight all lovers of breton marines. Lucien seevagen was trained at the école des arts décoratifs in paris, then at the studio of eugène charvot. He began with engraving, especially etching, before fully blossoming in painting. From 1907, he exhibited at the salon des artistes français, then at the salon des indépendants and the salon d'automne. From the 1910s, his style is oriented towards the laying of solid shades and the use of the ring - like our work -, thus indicating his assimilation of the pictorial models developed a few years earlier in pont-aven. The marcel-bernheim gallery often presents his works at 18, avenue matignon, especially in january 1920 - the exhibition being the subject of a catalogue. Lucien seevagen arrives convalescing on the island of bréhat after the first world war, during which he was gassed. In 1920, while maintaining a studio in montparnasse at 242, boulevard raspail, the painter and his wife settled permanently in brittany. His studio, located above the kerpont, offers him one of the most beautiful views of the island of bréhat, view represented and clearly located on our painting. Many works by the artist are in our public collections like the painting of la plage du ris in douarnenez kept at the museum of quimper which remains in the same marine style as our painting with large flat areas and very small boats suggested by touches of color.
