Initialled Bowl

€260

A hand painted terracotta serving bowl dating back to the late 1800s with its unique initials representing the family it belonged to or the potter who made it. The hand painted initials are encircled by a modern colour combination of lime green, ochre and and mustard rings, set against a buttermilk glaze, giving it a unique character. This bowl would have been primarily used for domestic, everyday life and more specifically to serve a family during meals - where they would have all eaten from the single plate - beginning with the father, and ending with the children. The old terracotta pottery of the southern italian regions of basilicata, puglia and calabria are thick and robust and these types of bowls would have been in use up until the 1950s/60s, after which mass production made this handmade pottery obsolete. This antique bowl has a lovely handmade, rustic feel as well as special patina brought about by years of use. Also available in a matching version as seen in the photos, they would be perfect to coordinate and create an impactful centrepiece. Found in martina franca. The hilltop town of the valle d’itria known for its baroque architecture. Dimensions: h7cm X w39cm X d39cm. These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
