Mid-Century Modern Italian Sideboard with Bar Cabinet, Osvaldo Borsani 1950s This exquisite midcentury modern Italian sideboard with a built-in bar cabinet, designed by Osvaldo Borsani for Atelier Borsani Varedo in the 1950s featuring a refined blend of high-quality materials and sophisticated functionality, this piece exemplifies the elegance of Italian furniture-making during the period. The structure is crafted from a combination of solid maple and solid mahogany, meticulously veneered in luxurious rosewood, resulting in a striking contrast of warm wood tones and rich textures. The elegant brass feet and original brass keys add a touch of refinement, highlighting the meticulous attention to detail that defines Borsani’s work. The sideboard is thoughtfully designed with both storage and display in mind. It features four finely crafted drawers, offering ample storage for dining essentials, and a distinctive black drop-down door that reveals an additional storage compartment. One of its most remarkable design elements is the sophisticated high accordion-door system, which opens smoothly to reveal the bar cabinet. Inside, the bar section is elegantly finished in solid maple, enhanced by classic brass columns and glass elements that create a luxurious atmosphere. This functional yet stylish design allows for an effortless transition between a closed, streamlined form and an open, inviting bar space. To preserve the authenticity and beauty of this exceptional piece, it has undergone a meticulous restoration process carried out by our expert team. The wood has been professionally treated against parasites to ensure long-term durability, and the structure has been carefully repaired and reinforced. The surface has been fully refinished and polished, restoring its original luster and depth while respecting the integrity of the materials. Additionally, all brass components have been cleaned and polished to bring back their radiant shine, and the structural opening mechanisms have been revised to ensure seamless functionality. As part of a larger living room set, this sideboard was originally designed to complement a full dining suite and a matching credenza with a built-in bar cabinet, also available in our collection. Each element of this ensemble reflects Borsani’s signature approach to mid-century design—where innovation meets impeccable craftsmanship (all items available) Osvaldo Borsani (1911–1985) was one of the most influential Italian designers and architects of the 20th century, renowned for his innovative approach to furniture design and his seamless fusion of craftsmanship with modern industrial techniques. Born in Varedo, Italy, Borsani was deeply immersed in the world of design from an early age. His father, Gaetano Borsani, was a master cabinetmaker who founded Atelier Borsani Varedo, a prestigious furniture workshop known for its high-quality craftsmanship and custom-made pieces  (The workshop became known for its luxurious and elegant designs, blending neoclassical influences with modernist principles). The atelier gained recognition in the 1920s and 1930s for producing elegant, handcrafted furniture that combined traditional techniques with modern aesthetics. After studying architecture at the Politecnico di Milano, Osvaldo joined his family’s company in the 1930s and played a crucial role in shifting its focus towards a more modern and functionalist design philosophy. His early works, while rooted in classic Italian craftsmanship, displayed a strong Art Deco influence, eventually transitioning into the sleek, rationalist designs that defined Italian mid-century modernism. In 1953, Osvaldo Borsani co-founded Tecno, a company that became a major player in the production of industrially manufactured modern furniture.  While Tecno became Borsani’s primary focus, his earlier works under Atelier Borsani Varedo remain highly sought after for their elegance, high-quality materials, and timeless craftsmanship. These pieces are now considered rare collector’s items, representing an important transition in Italian furniture design from traditional artisanal production to the sleek modernist aesthetics of the post-war era.
