Description
Ancient jewish / hebrew oil lamp, in the shape of a bench with 8 holes, decorated with volute motifs, enhanced by a royal crown and a bird with 2 heads - in bronze with golden patina nineteenth century - this type of oil lamp was used to celebrate the festival of lights (hanukkah), commemorating the miracle that occurred during the reconsecration of the temple of jerusalem during the revolt of the maccabees (167-165 bc), after its plunder by antiochus IV epiphanes. Intended to be placed on a windowsill to publicly announce the miracle of hanukkah, its eight lamps are lit successively each of the eight days of the holiday using the ninth lamp, called the shamash ("helper" or "servant").
