Description
A rare and precious antique sumak carpet from a private collection, dating from the late 18th/early 19th century. For an item more than 200 years old, it is in extraordinary condition, the colors always vibrant and the fibers not worn. It was not a carpet that served as flooring. Such a rug has been a collector's item since its first return to france. The term sumak, sumakh, or soumak, refers to the technique of the "coiled weft" spread throughout the east. They are wrapped in wools of different colors, indeed the sumakh are easily recognizable by the compact consistency and the wefts running freely on the back of the carpet. Like weaving techniques, the origin of sumakh designs is ancient: animal and geometric motifs such as stylized dragons and birds, medallions... In meaningful symbols. It's 200x129. The selecy site does not offer an option to select oriental carpets other than persian. It is a soumak carpet woven by the nomadic tribes of the caucasus and although they wandered the persian lands, they are more associated with russia and kazakhstan. So, although I selected the "persian" option, it is not persian.
