Kokeshi were created by kiji-shi (wood craftsmen) in the north of Honshū (the largest island in Japan), in the Tohoku region, at the end of the Edo era. At the beginning of their creation, these dolls representing little girls were small toys for children, before being sold as souvenirs for tourists. Their production then diversified in terms of size, shape and decoration. In the past, there were several words for Japanese dolls, depending on where they were produced (kogesu, kiboko, deko, etc.). At a meeting of artisans and collectors in 1940, it was decided that the word kokeshi (こけし?), written in hiragana, would henceforth serve as the standard name.
