Uzerche, original black chalk drawing by Jean Villette (1913-2005)

I am selling this large original drawing on canson paper signed jean villette (1913-2005), artist and historian from chartres, specialist in chartres and its cathedral, to which he devoted numerous works. This black chalk drawing represents the historic village of uzerche (corrèze), as evidenced by the handwritten mention of the artist at the bottom left of the sheet. Obviously adopting an elevated point of view (from the window?), the artist depicts with a lively and confident line the village, from which the romanesque bell tower of the saint-pierre abbey emerges. We observe a beautiful mastery of shadow and light, with deep nuances in the dark areas, characteristic of black stone. On the reverse, a yellow sticker inscribed “32” testifies to the probable exhibition of this drawing during the artist's lifetime: this drawing was acquired as a lot during an auction in chartres in september 2023 during the dispersal of the jean villette collection; the twenty other drawings, charcoals or lithographs which made up the lot also have stickers on the back, or even annotations in the artist's hand. I kept some of them, i'm getting rid of the others because I don't have enough walls to hang them all! Very good condition: only a small tear of 1 cm on the upper edge of the sheet to report, not annoying or visible when the drawing is framed again. A remnant of label at the top left on the reverse. The photographs are an integral part of the description: look at them carefully! Sheet format: h. 50 X l. 35.5 cm. Format of the drawing: h. 38 X l. 25.5 cm.
