The fashion for cutlery sets, especially as wedding gifts, began around the middle of the 19th century. Initially made of silver and intended for wealthy people to enable them to travel with their silverware (holiday resorts, military, colonies), cutlery sets were then made using less expensive techniques (silver-plated metal replacing solid silver), then they were gradually made from non-precious metals (stainless steel, white metal), in order to meet the demand of working-class families.
