Ss nieuw amsterdam was a dutch ocean liner built in 1937 in rotterdam for the holland america line. She is the second ship of the company to bear this name. Nicknamed the "peace ship, " she is still considered one of holland america's finest ships today. Its decoration celebrated the glorious years of the founding of new york by the dutch and paid tribute to pieter stuyvesant, the last dutch governor of the city. After an excellent start to her career, she was requisitioned as part of the second world war as a troopship, then resumed commercial service in 1947. Joined in 1959 by the rotterdam, it was then quickly assigned to cruises, airliners increasingly dominating the market on the north atlantic and continued this service until 1974, year of its demolition.
