Belgium / 1940 / painting / robert deman / wood, canvas / mid-century. An oil painting of a solitary man seated at a rustic wooden table, exuding an air of contemplation and introspection. Robert deman masterfully captures the play of light and shadow, highlighting the man's thoughtful expression as he gazes into the distance, lost in his thoughts. The warm, earthy tones of the background create a cozy atmosphere, inviting viewers to ponder what stories lie behind the man's gaze. The intricate details of the table, adorned with a few scattered objects, suggest a narrative waiting to unfold, making this artwork not just a visual delight but also a conversation starter. This painting invites you to pause and reflect. Robert de man (jr) was a belgian artist born in 1949 in roeselare and died in oostkamp in 2016. He was a painter, draftsman and pastellist. He was the son and pupil of andré de man. He studied at the academy in bruges and at st lucas in ghent. He is known for his expressionist design. He had a preference for landscapes, the mother and child theme, religious subjects, interior scenes, genre scenes and figures. His typical female figures are quiet, dreamy girls and women. His male figures are decrepit, shabby farmers and common people who are, as it were, fused with the soil on which they work. He depicts them in schematic design, with oversized hands, which gives their social concern a monumental expression. (piron) Dimensions painting: h 78 cm X w 57 cm. Ref. 24-0332.
