Born in reignac, in indre-et-loire, roland chanco tried his hand at drawing and painting very early on. At the age of 16, he already moved to the capital, first training in sculpture, before finally returning to painting and settling in the montmartre district. There, he worked on the motif, painted le moulin de la galette, la rue de l'abreuvoir, borrowing a naive style. "during these years, he met the painters of the butte, notably utrillo, gen paul, heuzé and picasso." in 1942, deeply marked by the war, chanco began a "dark" period, through dark works evoking the world of georges rouault. In the aftermath of the war, he joined the côte d'azur and settled in antibes where he began a career in medical electronics, while continuing to paint. "he continued his figurative work with pencil drawings in which the influence of picasso is clearly perceptible in the deformation of female nudes, before directing his research towards abstraction for a time." but it was from the 1960s onwards that chanco truly imposed his style. In 1958, he retired to roquefort-les-pins, where he would end his days and burn almost all of his works there in 1960. "it was a way for him to renew himself. He then developed a very personal style that makes his paintings now identifiable at first glance." populating his paintings with hieratic, exuberant characters, evoking puppets and circus characters, .
