Gothic architecture 1871. Achille vianelli. (Porto Maurizio 1803 - Benevento 1894) Oil on panel. 18.5x23 cm. Achille Vianelli (1803-1894) was an Italian painter, born in Porto Maurizio. Initially known as Vianelly, he Italianised his surname in 1845. He studied in Naples under Wilhelm Huber, together with Giacinto Gigante and Raffaele Carelli. He specialised in watercolours and became a renowned illustrator. He travelled around Italy, frequenting other artists' studios and developing his landscape style. In 1848, he received the knighthood of the Order of Francis I for his loyalty to the Bourbon crown. Subsequently, he founded a painting school in Benevento, attended by numerous young artists, including Gaetano De Martini. Influenced by the Posillipo School and the Dutch landscape painter Antoon Sminck van Pitloo, Vianelli adopted a freer technique in his landscapes, but retained his precision and detail as an illustrator of architectural views and popular scenes. His fame grew thanks to his illustrations of Viaggio pittorico del Regno delle Due Sicilie (Pictorial Journey of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies) and the guidebook Naples and its Famous Places. His works are characterised by minute details and accurate perspective. However, although he is recognised as a great draughtsman, Vianelli did not completely distance himself from Huber's classical views, but managed to combine his technical perfection with the lightness of the gigantic watercolour. Among his best-known works are Castel Nuovo, The Arch of Trajan, The Interior of Benevento Cathedral and Santa Maria del Soccorso in Foria d'Ischia.
