Description
This piece is truly a great example of the radical bauhaus aesthetic. Simple and functional, it perfectly represents the ethos of the avant-garde movement. The radical design of a cantilevered chair (freischwinger) was originally designed by the famous dutch modernist architect mart stam. It was presented for the first time to general public in stam's project of social housing at the werkbund die wohnung in stuttgart in 1927. Two years later anton lorenz gained the licence from stam to produce this type of cantilevered chair and he started to produce them under his company desta. This tubular chair with armrests is generally attributed as stam’s design but it was anton lorenz who modified the original design and added the armrests. This particular chair was produced in late 1940's by kovona (former slezak company) in czechoslovakia. Slezak gained a licence from thonet in the 1930’s to sell chairs similar to original thonet's b 43 f chair. Slezak's furniture catalogues refers the chair as k10 or kt10/p chair. The chair is in great vintage condition with only some minimal wear on the steel frame and with some patina gained over the years on the wooden parts (mainly on the seat).
