Japanese bench

Japanese bench handcrafted with hand tools in my workshop in provence. Maybe you can hear the song of the cicadas and see the giant of provence in the distance. To obtain this deep charred black I used the japanese technique of shou sugi ban which consists of burning wood. I then applied a wax. The veins of the wood are sublimated and cavities carved the wood making it remarkable! In my eyes it is more a sculpture than a functional bench... Between the shaping, the treatment of the wood, the different stages of shou sugi ban and waxing, the realization of this bench required me 30 hours of work. It will harmonize perfectly in a contemporary interior.
