Authentic African art. Old Kuba mask from Congo/Zaire from the beginning of the 20th century. Large royal mask with geometric and polychrome patterns (the streaks under the eyes symbolize tears). Raffia embroidered with cowrie shells representing wealth. The cowrie was a currency of exchange in certain African tribes. These masks were once used during ritual ceremonies; such as enthronement rites or funerals. Some signs of wear on the cowries, 1 or 2 missing parts and seams to be reinforced. A good cleaning is required on the raffia areas supporting the beads. Otherwise good general condition despite the age and fragility of the materials. Rare and particularly decorative mask due to its history and aesthetics. Dimensions: Height: 40 cm. Width: 22 cm. Depth: 13.5 cm. Careful shipping possible.
